This course offers you the opportunity to learn the architecture of the property market. It also allows you to learn how to use the relevant tools to uncover opportunities in the property market and the underlying determinants of the income-producing potential of an asset.


The main instructor for the course is Professor Samuel Azasu, Counselor of Real Estate and Academic Director of the Master of Real Estate program at the University of Navarra (Campus Madrid) in Spain.


This 6-week online course gives you a detailed introduction to the tools and processes of market analysis using a housing project as an example.

Starting from city-level analysis, it will allow you to understand how and why city growth is important for anticipating future demand for real estate.


Then, you will learn to estimate the level of excess demand within the market area of a specific project.

Finally, you will be able to use site and neighbourhood analysis to forecast prices and achievable rents for a project in a specific location.

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN

This course has been accredited for CPD/CET points by the South African Council for the Property Valuers Profession.


It has an allocation of 24 (twenty four) CPD/CET points

Since market analysis reports serve as inputs for valuation reports, feasibility studies, investment reports, asset management plans etc., anyone with a National Diploma equivalent and higher education, working in any role in the property sector can apply.

There will be numerical analysis so we will assume you can do basic computations in EXCEL. It is an advantage if you have elementary knowledge of economics. However, a tutor will be available to offer support should you find the computations challenging.

    I am an educational developer and a Counselor of Real Estate (CRE®) with over 25 years’ higher education experience in Sweden, the UAE, South Africa, and Spain. I also have over 15 years' experience managing curriculum redesign and quality control for regular degrees and executive courses in real estate. I have also done part-time work in planning and delivering training courses on teaching and curriculum design for university faculty in engineering and the built environment.

    My program development experience includes expanding an existing MSc program by a semester in response to Swedish government regulations in 2006. At Wits University from 2012 I redesigned and relaunched the BSc, PG Diploma and MSc programs, the first non-US partner programs accepted by IREM(USA) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Certified Property Manager designation, resulting in the largest increase in CPMs and the first African chapter of IREM. I also built an executive education program, generating revenues that became the second highest source of revenue for the School of Construction at Wits.

    I consult for the likes of the South African Facilities Management Association, the City of Johannesburg Property Company and private real estate developers. I have guest lectured for the University of Aberdeen Business School, Virginia Tech, Malmö Högskola and the School of Engineering, University of Navarra.

    My research covers real estate education, reward management for the real estate and facilities management sector, and corporate real estate management. My work has been published in the Journal of European Real Estate Research, Journal of Real Estate Literature, Property Management, African Geographical Review, International Journal of Learning and Change, the International Journal of Strategic Property Management, the Journal of Property Management, as well as the Journal of Corporate Real Estate Management. In addition, I edited two issues of the Journal of African Real Estate Research.

    I currently serve as an editorial board member for the Journal of Sustainable Real Estate. I also serve on the conference review committee of the CDIO network on engineering education. I previously served as a Board member for the European Real Estate Society and the African Real Estate Society.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is the schedule for the course? 

2. How many hours per day would I need to allocate to the full course, including studying and video participation?

You should allocate approximately 7 notional hours per week. 


3. How do the final exams/testing look? 

You will be required to submit an assignment at the end of week 6 of the course, which will count towards your final grade.

Assessments will also be in the form of knowledge quizzes, assignments and participation in the discussion forum activities.


4. What are the daily times for the course?

There are no daily classes for the course. The course material will be provided to the students weekly, to work through in their own time.

There will be a weekly consultation session with an instructor on the Friday of each week for every module at 1pm.

 

5. What happens if I fail the final examination? Will I be given another opportunity?

Yes.


6. Is the short course accredited?

The short course is accredited by the South African Council for the Property Valuers Profession, for 24 CPD/CET points.
