Dr Francois Deacon at the University of the Free State in the Dept. of Animal, Wildlife and Grassland Sciences is an NRF-evaluated researcher and registered with the South African Council of Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as Ecological Scientist. He is a senior lecturer in wildlife and rangeland sciences, teaching students’ grassland ecology and management.

His research focus on large herbivore habitat and its qualities. His research is well known locally and abroad on giraffe and rhino conservation and management. His work experience as ecologist includes over 50 scientific and technical reports on habitat ecology, management, and vegetation dynamics. His consultancy advice can be broadly applied and for that reason he has been invited to assist in various other countries, such as in the UAE, Namibia, Mozambique, Pakistan, Indonesia, USA, Canada, Congo etc. His detailed farm evaluations and planning include feasibility assessments and management reports on sustainable resources and land use planning. Habitat and rangeland ecology is a fascinating area of natural sciences that helps to advance our understanding of the interactions that determine the distribution and abundance of organisms. His knowledge is essential to refine conservation efforts and management decisions for herbivore species and their habitats.

Dr Deacon is a firm promoter for sustainable planning and protecting resources. Many times, landowners get in the lazy mindset of doing the same thing year-after-year without a plan, goals, or putting pen to paper. Lack of a management plan reduces a property’s potential, and too many unnecessary inputs reduce the bottom line. Dr Deacon help landowners (private or corporate) by evaluating the current state of their land, establishing goals and then develop a plan to reach those goals and increase their revenue by improving their resources.

Dean Ward holds a National Diploma in Property Valuation, National Diploma in Property Development and Management, a post graduate diploma in business management and various other qualifications.
He is a well-known figure in the property valuers profession with over 30 years’ experience in property valuation.
He has contributed to the academic field as a lecturer in property valuation and property law at CPUT for 12 years.
He has worked as a consultant valuer for many leisure development projects and hotel valuations in Africa and the Far East including China and Thailand.
He has presented papers on valuations and property tax as a guest speaker at national and international conferences.
He is currently contracted to the City Council of Cape Town.

Emile du Plessis is a senior economist with over 12 years’ experience in the financial services industry, covering unique international thematic research, investment strategies, global markets performance, econometric forecasting and behavioural economics. Emile is a regular speaker at executive meetings, industry forums and on radio programmes. He previously served as board member at the Bureau of Market Research. His economic forecasts on international fixed income securities, capital markets, equities, commodity prices, currencies, inflation and domestic production are published weekly by Bloomberg and Reuters. Emile won the 2019 and 2022 Refinitiv StarMine Award for Most Accurate Forecasting of a Foreign Exchange Rate. His econometric models of a bank’s credit exposure are utilised in fulfilling the regulatory requirement of International Financial Reporting Standards 9. Emile established and leads an applied Behavioural Economics capability across 15 countries. It includes a unique mastery programme focused on future skills development that equips staff to operate in the fourth industrial revolution. Emile is currently completing his PhD in Economics in Germany

I was born on 10 October 1972 in Hopetown and was the third generation to matriculate at Hoërskool Hopetown.
I Served in the South African National Defence Force as Lieutenant in 23 Field Squadron Bethlehem in 1992.
Later I attended Glen Agricultural College during the era of successful agriculture colleges and started farming on the family farm in 1996.
I farmed under irrigation with cash crops such as wheat, maize, popcorn, lucerne and pecan nuts, as well as with a livestock component of dorpers on natural grazing.
My organised agriculture career started in 1999 as secretary of the local agricultural association. I then progressed to chair of the agricultural union and became a member of the Agri Northern Cape Executive Committee in 2008.
I was elected as vice president of Agri Northern Cape in 2011 and elected as president of Agri Northern Cape in 2018 and then as vice president of Agri SA in 2021. I continue to serve in both these two positions.
Community involvement included serving on the school managing body, the hostel management and in church leadership, but I am currently focused on organised agriculture.
I am married to Lízel. My son Ian studied agriculture at the University of the Free State and joined the family business this year. I have two daughters. Jolíze studies medicine and Paulè studies somatology, both in Potchefstroom.
I love horse-riding, support the Cheetahs, and definitely do not do enough sport. I am away from home far too often to have a hobby.

As a kid I was always passionate and interested in nature and decided to pursue a career in wildlife. I enrolled in the University of the Free State and obtained a BSc degree in Zoology in 2009, a BSc Honours degree in Wildlife Management in 2010 and BSc Master’s Degree in Wildlife Management in 2014. My Masters focused on the ecological planning of a provincial reserve in the Northern Cape by studying the relationship between wildlife habitat selection and vegetation condition and carrying capacity. Currently, I am also busy with my PhD in Wildlife Management where my research topic is the impact of the recent drought on the veld and recovery thereof following the drought. I have been employed in the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental affairs, rural development and land reform since March 2014 as a Mammalogist for the Province and I’m certified as a Professional Natural Scientist in the Ecology Science field with the South African Council for Natural and Scientific Professionals. Within the department my job functions include: research and monitoring of fauna and flora, evaluation of fauna permits, review and assist in the developments of National policies/ non-detriment finds and management plans involving game species while also being assisting in education and providing specialist inputs on criminal cases involving wildlife.

I always felt a pull towards nature, wildlife and hunting. To get into this space I obtained a Diploma in Nature Conservation in 1998. I have been employed in the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform since February 1996, first as a student nature conservationist and then as a conservationist once I received my Diploma. My duties ranged from being an assistant in scientific services, to compliance and enforcement, reserve management and ultimately biodiversity management. I am also a qualified professional hunter, project manager, assessor and moderator and these skills come in handy in the wildlife industry. Within the department my job functions include: Monitoring of lion and rhino hunts, management of the inspection services unit which handles all wildlife utilisation issues, management of the permit administration unit and I am also involved in the biodiversity economy project which strives to transform the wildlife industry

Kobus Nel matriculated from Northern Cape High School (Kimberley) in 2000 and furthered his studies at the University
of the Free State in 2001 graduating with a BComm degree in 2003. After his graduation he embarked on a 3-
year working holiday travelling to the UK in 2004.The purpose of this was to learn about other cultures and
countries in Europe to broaden his knowledge of the different type of job markets and the different economies
and exchange rates at play. On his return in 2007, he enrolled for the National Diploma in Property Valuations
and started working at his family business, Nel Valuations under the mentorship of his dad, Johan Nel, who
was well known in the market for his dedication to His profession and strong customer service ethic. Kobus is proud
to say that he has inherited his father's passion for the business and customers.
Due to his enjoyment of working in this industry he has studied further and obtained his National Diploma
(Valuations) in 2011 and registered as a Professional Valuer in 2018 with the SACPVP. In September2015, Kobus
started working at Sol Plaatje Municipality as a Manager: Property Taxation and Miscellaneous Billing and was
appointed as the Municipal Valuer for the General Valuation Roll of Sol Plaatje Municipality in 2019. His National
Certificate: Municipal Financial Management was obtained in 2017. Kobus is a skilled valuer with over 14 years’
experience. He is driven and has an impeccable work ethic. Kobus a passionate family man and a lover of sports,
nature, and people.

Writing and podcasting about farming, agricultural education and development brought me home to a passion for the outdoors and being in nature. Gradually falling in love with the possibility of becoming an ‘earth warrior’ creating a sustainable livelihood for myself (and possibly many more) is something I would really like to do. Working in the field one sees the opportunities the agricultural sector can offer, and I want to be part of the exciting journey.
South Africa still face many transformation challenges. As a black woman of mixed descent, I understand that there are still many barriers to entering the sector. Access to the capital means of production such as land, water and money for inputs remains difficult. Finding the path of least resistance and looking for a starting point led me to consider apiculture. This business can be built up gradually as one is able to learn, grow the asset base and create by-products, explore markets and provide eco-system services.
Early in 2022 this transition started with leaving full-time work, complementing it with an entrepreneurial journey with the registration of HoneyatDawn Pty Ltd, a beekeeping/value enhancing/eco-systems service enterprise. To this new venture I will bring over ten years work experience, a communications and marketing portfolio, strong sense of commitment and hardworking attitude.
I’ve always been driven by working in an environment that gives me a sense of purpose. While working as the editor for audience and engagement at Food For Mzansi, my focus and efforts were set towards reaching audiences and communities who can benefit and grow through the content. It also afforded me with the chance of connecting with beekeepers across the country who encouraged my interest in apiculture. Currently the number of young black beekeepers in this business space is limited given the country’s history and limited entry access. Most of the historically disadvantaged working with bees is at the very lowest level. Working on farms with very little prospect of long-term value enhancement in the sector.
The aim is to build my capacity and business and access grant funding and other investment to empower women to take up opportunities within agriculture, and more so beekeeping. Access can also be facilitated through relatively low-level technology transfers and with the current global challenges of honey shortages as well as the threat to bee populations. Currently I’m the only employee working on the start-up phase of the business.
Beginning with a hive-by-hive approach, equipping and skilling up a network of keepers (a number of part-time, hourly remunerated who will monitor the hive health and security) across properties/spaces will be one way to gradually build up a long-term sustainable intervention and business. Despite the challenges in this sector, especially as a new entrant I am motivated to pave the way for others to follow. Bees are one of the world's most important pollinators for food crops - each day we rely on bees and other pollinators for food.
I am passionate about growing this enterprise to unlock opportunities for more women owned small to medium businesses.
