The 2024 Berg Seminar will be held at the picturesque Drakensberg Sun Hotel Resort, nestled in the heart of the majestic Drakensberg mountains. This event promises to be an enriching experience, combining the serene beauty of the location with insightful discussions on key industry topics.

We are delighted to welcome back Eileen Andrew, MSCi Vice-President, and Georgina Smit, Head of Technical at the Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA). Their expertise and perspectives have been invaluable in previous seminars, and we are excited to have them join us once again.

Joining them this year are distinguished professionals who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the seminar. Sean is a property professional who has spent a decade working in various sectors of the property industry in South Africa and the UK. Most of his professional experience has been as a property market analyst and commentator.

In 2017 he founded Divercity Property Solutions which offers a range of advisory and training solutions to the property industry in SA and wider Sub-Saharan Africa. He is a proptech commentator and enthusiast, and is cofounder of the SA Proptech and Proptech Africa associations. He is active through his business and his voluntary roles with various organisations, and believes strongly in the power of collaboration. Sean is passionate about South Africa and the wider continent, entrepreneurship, education and proptech.

Thireshen Govender is an architect, urbanism and researcher practicing in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was awarded
the Chevening Scholarship through which he undertook a Masters in Urban Design at The Bartlett (UCL). Following
extensive travels he founded UrbanWorks in 2008, a design-research studio concerning itself with the design and
implementation of transformative infrastructures in post-traumatic sites. He is the co-author of Township Economies:
People, Spaces, Practices (2020) - which brings new insights into how frontier territories are being established through
rampant informal practices. Thireshen has taught and lectured at various international schools of architecture and has
been a tutor at the inaugural Venice Biennale College in 2023. His research through the University of Johannesburg’s
Graduate School of Architecture, where he led Unit 14: Rogue Economies, documents the hidden forces shaping our
cities while experimenting with methods on radical speculation in the context of extreme urban crisis. Through his
teaching and research, he is a Core Faculty Member at the African Futures Institute where is a tutor for the Nomadic
African Studio. He is also an Independent Director at the Sustainable Livelihoods Foundation – which aims to contribute
through research, policy and intervention towards economic and social transformation of marginalised neighbourhoods in
Southern Africa.
