The SAIV Southern Branch George Winter Seminar will take place 12 - 13 July at Protea Hotel King George.

Thys Beukes is registered as a professional valuer with the SACPVP. He has been in the profession full time since 1992. His core function is to perform valuations of fixed and moveable assets. He previously served as the Chairman of the Central Branch of the SA Institute of Valuers seated in Bloemfontein and now serves as an executive member of the Southern Branch. Thys has delivered many presentations and talks on commercial, specialized and farm valuations at seminars hosted by the SAIV and has an in depth knowledge of the valuation of these types of properties.
Thys started his own valuation company, MRB Property Valuations in April 2014. This company is a service provider to various financial institutions, government departments, mining companies and municipalities for commercial, residential, specialized and agricultural valuations. This company also has various service level agreements with national valuation companies.

Willem is a registered Professional Planner as well as a Professional Valuer. He practiced in both professions
in the South Cape for most of his career in his firm WM de Kock Associates. During the past 10 years he was
involved in the drawing up of Spatial Development Frameworks (SDF’s) of George, Mossel Bay and Knysna as
well as in compiling Local Spatial Precinct Plans in those areas, including precinct plans for the Mossel Bay
CBD, harbour and airfield, and development corridors such as the Gwayang Tourism corridor towards the
George airport and the Louis Fourie corridor in Mossel Bay.
He performed valuations in all the towns and rural areas of the South Cape and often came across
issues of development potential of land, population trends and market demand as factors that
impact on market value of vacant and rural land.

I have been practising as a valuer for
more than 25 years having started out as Candidate Valuer at Fenwick Valuations then based in Pretoria.
My main focus of valuation is on commercial properties and agricultural properties. My current clients
include Growthpoint, SBV, Fidelity, ABSA Bank, Grindrod Bank, Access Bank, IDC, Noble Property
Fund, Castle View Property Fund, Albaraka Bank and various private clients.
I am also a senior regional manager for Spectrum Valuations and Asset Solutions and is based in Cape
Town in the Western Cape Province. See detailed breakdown below.
Typical valuations performed the last 24 months includes factories, warehouses, offices, shopping
centres, petrol stations and farms in and around South Africa.
Typical management duties include daily assistance to valuation staff in the business related to
valuation matters, valuation auditing processes, report designing and assistance with report writing,
client interactions, staff interactions, sourcing of new clients, assisting clients with valuation matters.
Overall client relationship management, staff training where needed and assistance with new staff
training.

John started his economist career in the National Treasury, in the team that implemented the country's 1st Medium Term Expenditure Framework in the early days of Finance Minister Trevor Manuel's tenure.
His time at IHS Globalinsight (now IHS-Markit), a major US-based consultancy, was his introduction to macroeconomic analysis. This was invaluable in developing his understanding of how the “bigger economic picture” impacts “down” on the sectors that he would later analyse.
At Absa Group (2000-2005), as macroeconomist co-ordinating the Group’s economic forecasting process, he was named Reuters Economist of the Year in 2004.
A passion for property cycle analysis, developed during the pre-2008 housing bubble, took him to First National Bank (FNB) in 2006 as a Property Economist. In his time at FNB Home Loans, they developed what was arguably the market leading South African residential market analysis at the time.
He moved to FNB Commercial Property Finance late in 2018.
He love the “behavioral” side of economics, with human irrationality and cognitive bias being a huge influence on both corporate and household decision making. Another interest is in the drivers of human well-being, a complicated matter often ignored by economic policy makers and households alike, to our detriment.
Public speaking and Media/Public relations are enjoyable “hobbies” for him in his main focus areas of economics, and occasionally in subjects such as “bias in decision making and goal setting”, “well-being economics” and motivational speaking.
After growing up on a diet of “ball sports”, including tennis, hockey, squash and golf, he more recently become a “social endurance sport junkie”. This includes the Comrades Ultra-Marathon, the Ironman Ultra-Triathlon, Kilimanjaro, the 2,300km Freedom Challenge Mountain Bike Race Across South Africa and the 2,800km Beit Bridge- Cape Town TransAfrika race.
His sporting allegiances lie with Manchester United, and that great SA rugby team, the Blue Bulls.

In his current position, as Manager: Valuation Operations and Municipal Valuer at the City of Cape Town, Llewellyn’s role is to lead and manage a team responsible for General and Supplementary Valuations of approximately 910 000 registered properties, as well as a host of activities associated with this including data collection, objection and appeal resolution. Unlike most valuers, Llewellyn offers strong valuation modelling, statistical & data analysis and database management skills. His past experience in the private sector has exposed him not only to valuations, but also provided a solid foundation for his ability to conduct property economic research, to author property publications and to draft reports and business plans. His management experience in dealing with internal customers, as well as his valuation experience in dealing with external customers at various Valuation Appeal Boards, has enhanced his communication and negotiation skills.

Lourens serves as the Managing Director and Founding Partner of UNIQUECO Property Valuers. He holds several leadership roles within SARWA and held the presidency role from 2021 to 2022. And is a member of the International Right of Way Association (IRWA).
Lourens hold a National Diploma in Real Estate Economical Science – Valuation, he is a Professional Valuer with 29 years’ experience, including 19 years in Executive Directorate & Management roles. He has also pursued additional education in Pastoral Narrative Therapy from the University of Pretoria.
Lourens is actively involved in various industry organizations, including SA Institute of Valuers (SAIV), Chartered Institute of Government Finance Audit & Risk Officers (CIGFARO) as well as the Franchise Association of South Africa as a Franchisor for UNIQUECO.
Lourens' specialist expertise spans a wide range of areas, including Mass Appraisal for Municipal Rates & Taxes, Investment Property, Right of Way Servitude Valuation for Land Acquisition & Expropriation, Insurance Replacement Valuations, Portfolio Valuations, Leisure & Development, and Valuation Software Development through Afroval Software Consulting.
Outside of work, his personal interests include fly fishing, sailing, golf, traveling, enjoying the outdoors, and singing.

Dean Ward holds a National Diploma in Property Valuation, National Diploma in Property Development and Management, a post graduate diploma in business management and various other qualifications.
He is a well-known figure in the property valuers profession with over 30 years’ experience in property valuation.
He has contributed to the academic field as a lecturer in property valuation and property law at CPUT for 12 years.
He has worked as a consultant valuer for many leisure development projects and hotel valuations in Africa and the Far East including China and Thailand.
He has presented papers on valuations and property tax as a guest speaker at national and international conferences.
He is currently contracted to the City Council of Cape Town.

Accommodation

A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Protea Hotel King George on a first-come, first-served basis. Protea Hotel King George rooms face either the golf course and Outeniqua Mountains or the gardens and swimming pools. The Hotel features a variety of leisure facilities including 2 outdoor pools, darts and bowling. Children will be kept entertained by the dedicated entertainment programme over the course of the seminar.
